these are the photos I mentioned in class…

Here’s a link to a website that discusses her odd change of appearance.

On one website someone commented that perhaps “in prison is actually a code name for ‘I had plastic surgery’. I hardly recognize her!”

Maybe it can be attributed to aging, but it happened mighty quickly and that’s a big change! Also, how much can a person’s face change in two years?

Plastic surgery is such an controversial topic in Hollywood, a place where one is largely paid for his/her image. The tabloids follow it like mad–who has had her lips pumped, her boobs done, her stomach pumped etc. Most of the stars reply with the infamous “no comment” when questioned about their enhanced body. Scarlet Johanson, however, recently stated that she would of course get surgery, because she doesn’t “want to become an old hag.” Since when did getting old = hag? There are so many beauty products out there for wrinkles, cellulite, etc–I think that when you have the markers of time, you have earned them. Embrace those wrinkles along with those what Bridget Jones has famously coined, “wobbly bits!” Love the skin you’re in.

Plastic surgery allegations are so rampant in celebrity culture that sometimes it seems hard to think of a young starlet who hasn’t gone under the knife. Some of the biggest publicity Ashley Simpson ever got (besides the while SNL lip syncing debacle) was when she overhauled her face along with her image. While this is not a new phenomenon (I remember being 14 and debating whether Britney had gotten a boob job) it does seem that plastic surgery among young celebrities has boomed recently. Star magazine has a weekly section called “Star Cuts” where it shows before and after pictures of celebrities they believe have gotten significant work done.

While I do think that plastic surgery has become more commonplace (if the E network and Dr. 90210 has taught me anything), I think there is something more to the fact that we are so willing to accuse celebrities of getting plastic surgery. I use the word accuse because even though plastic surgery is getting more acceptable it is still something that carries a degree of shame, especially for young women whose carries are largely based on their appearance (and their partying pedigree). I think it goes along with the trend that it increasingly more permissible to label these tabloid stars as sluts and whores. It doesn’t seem that bad to say Nicole Ritchie got her lips pumped up if we were just calling her a worthless drug addicted whore (perhaps we aren’t that blunt, perhaps we are even witty, but a lot of times that is what it comes down to).

I think this is one of the reasons I’m uncomfortable just assuming stars got plastic surgery. So she looks more feminine, did a doctor really do that or can it be attributed to make-up, style choices, maturing, or even weight loss. It’s interesting that her “feminizing” her look automatically draws plastic surgery speculation. I also find these pictures slightly less convincing because they are compared to her mugshot (where she is supposedly intoxicated). It’s hard to compare that to the posed pictures on the red carpet. I think these pictures arise questions independent of plastic surgery. Why has her look changed? Is it just because she is growing up or did she feel pressure to look more feminine? We mentioned in class the negative reception her character got on Lost. It seems that it coincided with a kind of fall from grace. After Girlfight she was celebrated as a revelation, on Lost she was reviled as an unnecessarily aggressive bitch. Where people just sick of her playing the same part, has her tough girl image worn out its welcome? Is this saying something more about her or about the cultural moment? Was 2000 that long ago? Or maybe it’s simpler; maybe a different audience was watching Lost than those who applauded Girlfight.

Heres all Perez Hilton has said about her recently: Plastic surgery allegations are so rampant in celebrity culture that sometimes it seems hard to think of a young starlet who hasn’t gone under the knife. Heres all Perez Hilton has said about her recently. Its mostly about her sexuality and its not remotely flattering. It includes talk of her drunk driving arrest, the ankle braclet incident and refers to her as both “dykelicous” and “easy and sleazy”. Enjoy
