Girly Business May 10, 2007

Along with my comment on Jennifer’s post about tampon commercials, this is a Dr. Pepper commercial that pretty much speaks for itself: the guy is doing all these girly things for his girlfriend like folding her underwear, holding her purse, holding an umbrella over her and her shopping bags. The beginning part is really funny but I’ll let you all watch the commercial; you’ve probably seen it before. It goes along with my questions about male aversion to all-things-period. In response to the recent menstruation posts, I decided to post some Tampon Ads (some old, some new). Particularly interesting to me was how difficult it was to find these ads on youtube, as most of the ads that came up on the search were either a) in another language–what does that mean about the US perception of periods versus a Latin American/Russian, etc? b) spoofs of past commercials–the most common one dealing with the absorbent powers of the tampon c) homemade, yes, homemade serious commercials.

I think we noted it early on this semester, but please notice how the actual period is never really addressed in a forthright manner. Instead, you see women talking, playing sports, giggling, striping–you never actually even see a bathroom.

Anyway, for your enjoyment…check ’em out! (more…)

It’s the women’s issue at The Onion!

This issue features such stellar articles as, “How Can I Use Feminism to my Advantage?” (a woman co-opts the feminist movement to screw other women), and “The Top Ten Euphemisms for Menstruation”.

good stuff, per their usual.

I saw this article on the front page of the New York Times this morning (it’s also linked to in the news in the sidebar).  It’s about a new birth control pill that’s being developed that could eliminate all periods, as opposed to current birth control pills which have some placebos so that women still have their periods about four times a year.  This article not only showed some troubling aspects of how pharmaceutical companies and the FDA work, but it also brought up some interesting ideas about ‘natural’ female qualities.  I also thought that the actual article itself could’ve used some more research and better word choice in order to be more accurate, but (more…)
